Man … a word that holds lots of meanings and indications but unfortunately it lost all of this in our days. It is really hard to find a real man these days to stand for you or even for himself. The only word that describes men is EGOCENTRIC. The mom gets pregnant wishing that the baby in her womb is a boy but a question I always asked myself is WHY? What is so special in men that makes a girl worth nothing in their presence? . But I found out that nothing is so special about them but the big fuss people raise up a boy on that he is something really important in society and that he is the best. If we really think about it we will find that the truth is: each man in this world is raised up by his mom who spoils him and treats him in a way that makes him think he is the king and the best; he even starts disrespecting others even his mom. After that this spoiled creature asks his mom to look for a bride and the mom thinks that her son is the best and she must find Miss Universe for him that might meet his desires. She criticizes each girl she meets as if her son is really something and finally the man gets married. Of course he will treat his wife as a maid asking her to do everything for him even brushing his teeth. And the mistreatment goes on and on and on and on until the wife is fed up and can't take it any more. So she has to do something to take an action but she can't, do you know why?! well, as Jerusalem said generalizations is not always correct, some of what you said applies to some "men" out there but not all of them are like this, and you know it. Now for the question you raised I'm not sure of the answer, because if the wife fights and let us say asked for divorce and there were kids in the middle it is a disaster, even if there weren't any kids the wife herself will suffer from how the community looks at a divorced woman, I don't agree with the community on this but sadly this is the situation.
back to the beginning of your topic in my opinion you should blame the early human communities who settled in forests near beast and the man had to defend his family (wife) against the beasts since in general (now you'll get mad I know) men are stronger or this what we "men" like to believe ;-)
an interesting topic, I would agree on what you said except for the generalization.

Always generalization is not valid but I do agree that the phenomenon you mentioned in your post does exist in our societies :(
Regarding your question:
A. The wife takes an action that leads nowhere most of the times or ends up with disastrous consequences to the marital life, or she takes no action, simply because a decent respectful lady in the perception of people is this one who stays quiet to keep the marriage while most of the times silence does no good to the marriage :(
